A Million Suns by Beth Revis, published by Puffin on 5th April 2012

Goodreads synopsis:
The ship's ruler is dead and a rebellion threatens. Amy wants to help Elder as he tries to take charge, but she's torn between her feelings for him and the chaos that's pulling everything apart. As more harrowing discoveries are made about Godspeed, Amy is caught in a desperate race to unravel its secrets. Only one thing is certain.

They have to get off this ship.

Review:
'Across the Universe' was an outstanding debut by author Beth Revis.  I loved it and couldn't wait or the second book in the trilogy.  I've had a long wait but...it was worth every second because 'A Million Suns' was an incredible read full of mystery, danger, romance and excitement, tempered with the allure of space.

I actually reread 'Across the Universe' before starting this book and I'm glad I did because it helped me to pick up where the story left off.  There's no recap of events at the start so I would recommend reminding yourself of what happened previously.  This also gave me a chance to reconnect with the characters before following them on the next stage of their journey.

The narrative is once again shared between Amy and Elder.  I particularly enjoyed seeing events onboard Godspeed through Amy's eyes as she begins to unravel the secret that Orion had kept hidden for so long.  It's a secret that had me on tenterhooks throughout the book.  I was dying to know what it was and how it was going to influence all their future plans as well as their actual existence.  Revis ramps up the suspense from the opening chapter which left me in a state of great anticipation and wanting to keep on and on reading until I discovered what it was.

The book deals with life on Godspeed and shows what it's like with Elder now in charge and the population of the ship off of the drug Phydus.  Unfortunately things aren't going so smoothly for Elder and he has to cope with the threat of mutiny and general unrest among the people, as well as the food supply running out.  It was interesting seeing the kinds of decisions he made, as well as the fact that although he may not always make the right choice, he's always thinking about what's best for the people in his charge.  He's still growing on me as a character but I like his relationship with Amy and the romance between them which always seems to be bubbling just under the surface.

I was amazed and impressed all over again with the world that Beth Revis has created on the ship, as well as the detail that she applies to every facet of the characters' lives.  I felt totally immersed in the story and the various twists and turns of the plot.

The third book in the trilogy entitled 'Shades of Earth' is published in May 2013.  It's going to be another long wait and I don't know how I'm going to hold out until I get my hands on a copy but I have no doubt it will be just as good if not better than the preceding books in the series.

Hotly anticipated sequels #2

Hotly anticipated sequels is an occasional feature I do to highlight some of the awesome books coming out over the next few months, or in some cases, next year.  I have so many on my wishlist that I'm going to need a new bookcase at this rate.  Here are a few of the sequels which I'm counting down the days for!

This is the sequel to 'Across the Universe' which is an incredible read and an outstanding debut from Beth Revis.  I'm incredibly excited about the follow-up although the plot is being kept under wraps at the moment.  There's also quite a wait for this one as it's not published until 10th January 2012, making it a perfect post-Christmas present!

For months part-angel Clara Gardner trained to face the raging forest fire from her visions and rescue the alluring and mysterious Christian Prescott from the blaze. But nothing could prepare her for the fateful decisions she would be forced to make that day, or the startling revelation that her purpose—the task she was put on earth to accomplish—is not as straightforward as she thought.

Now, torn between her increasingly complicated feelings for Christian and her love for her boyfriend, Tucker, Clara struggles to make sense of what she was supposed to do the day of the fire. And, as she is drawn further into the world of part angels and the growing conflict between White Wings and Black Wings, Clara learns of the terrifying new reality that she must face: Someone close to her will die in a matter of months. With her future uncertain, the only thing Clara knows for sure is that the fire was just the beginning.

'Unearthly' has been one of my favourite books so far this year.  I didn't want it to ever finish so 'Hallowed' literally is one of my hottest anticipated sequels at the moment!  I'm dying to see how the relationship between Clara, Tucker and Christian is going to work itself out and with a death on the horizon it sounds like this could be a dramatic installment to the series.  It''s published on 24th January 2012.

Our heroine, Jessamine, has lost her faith in the men she loved, and her innocence as well. She turns to the dark side and plots to kill her father, using his own poisons, before becoming an assassin, a poisoner for hire. Can she recover from her heartache and reunite with her true love, Weed? Find out in this thrilling story where poisons, darkness and horror are a part of everyday life, and love is the only cure.

'Nightshade' is the sequel to 'The Poison Diaries' which had quite an intriguing finish and set things up nicely for the rest of the series.  I'm looking forward to seeing how the romance between Jessamine and Weed will be developed and how Jessamine will recover from her experiences in the first book.  There should be a lot in store for readers of this one and luckily it's being published by HarperCollins on 25th October 2011, so you should be able to grab it soon.

Review: Across the Universe - Beth Revis

Across the Universe by Beth Review, published by Puffin on 3rd March 2011

Goodreads synopsis:
Seventeen-year-old Amy joins her parents as frozen cargo aboard the vast spaceship Godspeed and expects to awaken on a new planet, three hundred years in the future. Never could she have known that her frozen slumber would come to an end fifty years too soon and that she would be thrust into the brave new world of a spaceship that lives by its own rules.

Amy quickly realizes that her awakening was no mere computer malfunction. Someone-one of the few thousand inhabitants of the spaceship-tried to kill her. And if Amy doesn't do something soon, her parents will be next.

Now Amy must race to unlock Godspeed's hidden secrets. But out of her list of murder suspects, there's only one who matters: Elder, the future leader of the ship and the love she could never have seen coming.

Review:
If you like your romances with a twist then this is the book for you!

The advance hype for 'Across the Universe' has been massive and I've been eagerly awaiting getting my hands on a copy for several months now.  When it finally arrived I was torn between wanting to pick it up and tear through it in one sitting or just savouring the delight of having it on my bookshelf and then reading it very slowly to make the enjoyment last.  My strength of will didn't last very long however and as soon as I did start it everything else was forgotten.  When I'd finished I was left with a feeling of stunned amazement and its taken me several days to put coherant thoughts together about it.

For a start, the story itself is just so original that it's unlike anything else I've read on the teen market.  It's described as a cross between Titanic and Avatar and combines romance and aspects of science-fiction.  I found myself absolutely immersed in the world that Beth Revis had created and gasping in shock at the many twists and turns and unexpected revelations that occur throughout.

The book gets off to a very strong start with one of the best openings I've ever read.  The reader's senses are assaulted with the horror of teenager Amy and her parents being cryo-genically frozen so that they can be transported into space onboard a ship which will take them 300 years into the future where they will re-populate and colonise a new planet.  The process is described in pretty graphic detail and is horrifying to witness.  This is an example of the way in which Revis doesn't pull any punches in the book.

Each chapter from then on alternates between Amy's point of view and that of Elder who is second-in-command to Eldest the commander and leader of the Godspeed ship and the man responsible for ensuring that everyone onboard the ship gets to their new location safely, even though many will never see the new planet.  I found the idea of living onboard the Godspeed and never being able to leave terrible to contemplate.  The thought of not breathing fresh air or seeing natural light or feeling real rain or sunshine is horrible.  I can understand the depth of despair that some of them feel and the sense of claustrophobia.    There are several layers to the Godspeed including the Keeper level, Feeder level and the Shipper level.  I enjoyed learning about each of these and the people that live on them.

The book deals with the power of knowledge as well as the danger that too much knowledge can bring.  The question of whether or not it is better to know or remain ignorant is touched upon and this is central to the plot of the story.

I enjoyed the burgeoning relationship between Amy and Elder and the gradual blossoming of their friendship.  Although Elder experiences romantic pangs for Amy, I'm glad that she's not won over quite so quickly and longs instead to have her parents with her.  As this is the first book in a trilogy there's plenty more time for their story to be explored in greater depth.

'Across the Universe' also contains adult themes of rape and incest, although these are written about sensitively and carefully.  Still, the inclusion of topics such as these, do mean that the book would probably be more suited to a slightly older teen audience.

I was completely blown away by this book.  The ending shocked me, as well as the beginning, and I was sucked into Amy's story from the word go.  If you're looking for a mind-blowing read that I would describe in one word as phenomenal then grab a copy of this now!
