Book Blogger Hop (4 - 7 February 2011)

This week I am taking part in Friday's Book Blogger Hop, which is hosted by
Crazy for Books

If you've just stumbled upon me via one of these, then welcome to my blog. I hope you find something that interests you!  The Hop is a great opportunity to visit lots of new blogs and meet like-minded book lovers from around the world.  I love taking part :)

I'm going to go and explore some of the other links over the weekend.  If you'd like to join in the fun too, then head on over to Crazy for Books, read the rules, post your own link and away you go :)

The question this week for the book hop is:
"What are you reading now and why are you reading it?"

I'm reading 'The Island' by Sarah Singleton at the moment and am really enjoying it.  I'd read reviews of it on various blogs beforehand which first brought it to my attention and I fancied trying something by this particular author.  The blurb described it as a 'murder in paradise' and I was in the mood for something fast-paced and exciting.

Book Blogger Hop (17-20 December)

This week I am taking part in Friday's Book Blogger Hop, which is hosted by
Crazy for Books

The question this week for the book hop is from Alex at Geek on the Brink:

"What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?"
That's a really good question.  When I'm browsing books in a shop or online, it's usually the plot synopsis that first gets me interested and makes me want to pick it up and read it.  However, when I start reading, if the characters don't click with me then often not even a good plot can save it.  So I guess I consider them both equally important!

The question this week for the book hop is from Marce at Tea Time With Marce

"What very popular and hyped book in the blogosphere did you NOT enjoy and how did you feel about posting your review?"

Hmm, this is a really interesting question and its taken me a while to come up with an answer!  I wouldn't say that they're particularly hyped or popular but I have to say that I was a little disappointed with 'Ballad' and 'Lament' by Maggie Steifvater.  It wasn't that I didn't enjoy them but they fell a little short of my initial expectations.  Saying that, I'm still really looking forward to reading 'Shiver' and 'Linger'.  I've heard great things about them and I'm excited to start this series.  In terms of posting a more negative review, I always try to be honest about what I think of books but if I didn't enjoy any then I try to specify why that might be.

The question this week for the book hop is from Sarah at Writer, Reader, Dreamer:

"What is your favorite book cover?"

There are some absolutely gorgeous book covers out at the moment.  One of the ones I love is for 'Fallen' by Lauren Kate.  It's a beautifully striking cover, with lovely muted shades of blue and the figure of a girl in the middle.  The follow-up, 'Torment' has an amazing cover too!

The question this week for the book hop is:

"Since Thanksgiving is coming up next week, let's use this week's Hop to share what we are most thankful for and what our holiday traditions are!"

Well, I live in the UK, so we don't celebrate Thanksgiving, but I'm always grateful and thankful for my wonderful family, whom I couldn't do without!

The question for Follow My Book Blog Friday is:

"How long have you been book blogging?"

I started my book blog at the end of August, so nearly three months.  I'm having so much fun meeting other book bloggers and sharing my love of reading.  It's great to see so many like-minded people and I adore finding out about new authors and book titles.  My TBR list is getting longer by the minute!

The question this week for the book hop is from Christina who blogs at The Paperback Princesses:

"If you find a book that looks interesting but is part of a series, do you always start with the first title?"
Most of the time I do like to read books in series order, I think it helps to understand the story and characters better.  Plus you never miss out on any important events or things you're supposed to know.  However, I do on occasion, read series out of order - usually when I've picked one of them up in the library and haven't been able to get hold of the other parts.

The question for Follow My Book Blog Friday is:

What is your usual monthly book budget?

I don't have a specific book budget set aside for each month.  I have zero willpower when it comes to books so if I see one I particularly want then I usually cave-in and buy it!  I'd go without food for books :)

The question this week for the book hop is:-

"What are your feelings on losing followers? Have you ever stopped following a blog?"

It's disappointing to lose followers but I always feel that everyone is entitled to follow whichever blogs they choose and maybe mine just isn't their cup of tea!  I don't think I've ever stopped following a blog but if there was one that hadn't been updated in months then I might remove it from my list.

The question this week for the book hop is:-
"What is the one bookish thing you would love to have, no matter the cost?"
I'm going to cheat and give two answers!  I would love to have a huge library with floor-to-ceiling bookcases and a ladder to reach them all.  It would have cosy chairs to sit and read in and would be stocked to the rafters with books.  If money was no object I'd also like a massive book spree in my favourite bookshop :)

The question this week for the book hop is from:-
Becky at Becky's Barmy Book Blog
"Where is your favorite place to read? Curled up on the sofa, in bed, in the garden?"
I have a favourite chair that I like to curl up and read in.  Stacked either side are piles and piles of books!
In the summer I quite often like reading in bed long into the night :)

The question this week for the book hop is from:-

"When you read a book that you just can't get into, do you stick it out and keep reading or move to your next title?"

This is a great question and quite a difficult one to answer!  I definitely hate giving up on a book, even if I'm really not enjoying it.  I always think that if I read just a little bit more then it might suddenly get better or something will happen that might completely change my view of the story.  I usually try to stick it out, although I might skim ahead a bit to see if it looks like improving.  I also hate not knowing the ending of a book (even if I don't finish it), so if I am going to call it quits then I'll probably sneak a peak at the last couple of pages.  On the other hand, there are literally thousands and thousands of books out there that I want to read so occasionally I think I should give up on move on to something else.

What's your favorite beverage while reading or blogging, if any? Is it tea, coffee, water, a glass of wine, or something else?
There's nothing better than curling up in a chair with an amazing book and a really big mug of tea!

The question this week for the book hop is from:-
Tina at Book Couture

"How do you spread the word about your blog?
(e.g. Social Networking sites, Book Blog Directories, comments on other blogs...)"

My blog is pretty new and I've only really been blogging seriously for just over a month.  I'm still discovering all the ways in which I can try to promote my blog and encourage new visitors.  I'm a member of sites such as GoodReads, BookMooch and ReadItSwapIt and I have posted links and reviews on these.  I find that this is often a good way of spreading the word.  I also actively visit other people's blogs and I try to read and comment on posts as much as possible.  It's nice feeling like part of a community and being a new blogger it's a good way of finding my feet and gathering interesting ideas for features and posts.

The question this week for the book hop is from:-
Elizabeth at Silver's Reviews.

When you write reviews, do you write them as you are reading or wait until you have read the entire book?

I always wait until I have read the entire book before writing my reviews.  Mainly because sometimes when I start a book, I might find it a little slow or can't really get into it properly, but there nearly always comes a turning point in the book where it either becomes magical and amazing or it just doesn't get any better.  I like to give it a fair chance before writing any thoughts down about it.  Once or twice I've completely changed my mind about a book!  I do need to write my reviews pretty soon after finishing the book though because I nearly always forget some key details otherwise.

The question this week for the book hop is from:-

Post a link to a favorite post or book review that you have written in the past three months.

I have chosen my review of 'Fire' by Kristin Cashore.  I really loved this book, more so because it totally took my by surprise how much I enjoyed it.  I'd love people to try reading one of Cashore's books as I'm sure you'd become a fan fast!
